Follow these simple steps to connect to an FTP site using WinSCP.

Step 1: Open WinSCP

Launch the WinSCP application on your computer. You can do this by clicking the WinSCP icon on your desktop or searching for it in the Start menu.

Step 2: Open the Login Window

When WinSCP opens, the login window will appear. If you don't see it, click on Session in the top menu, and select New Session.

Step 3: Enter FTP Connection Details

In the login window, you need to fill in the connection details for the FTP site you want to connect to:

  1. File protocol: Select FTP from the drop-down menu.
  2. Host name: Enter the FTP server address (e.g., ftp.example.com).
  3. Port number: The default FTP port is 21. If a different port is specified by your FTP server, enter that number.
  4. User name: Enter your FTP account's user name.
  5. Password: Enter your FTP account's password.

Step 4: Choose Advanced Settings (Optional)

If you need to adjust additional settings, click the Advanced button:

  • You can configure options like passive mode, encryption, and directory preferences.
  • If you're unsure, the default settings should work for most FTP connections.

Step 5: Save Your Session (Optional)

If you want to save your connection settings for future use, click the Save button, name your session, and click OK.

Step 6: Connect to the FTP Site

Once you’ve entered all the details, click the Login button. WinSCP will attempt to connect to the FTP site using the provided information.

Step 7: Navigate Through the FTP Server

After successfully connecting, you'll see two panels in the WinSCP window:

  1. The left panel displays your local files on your computer.
  2. The right panel displays the files on the FTP server.

You can now navigate the server's directories and transfer files by dragging and dropping between the panels.

Step 8: Disconnect from the FTP Site

Once you are done with your file transfers, disconnect from the FTP server by clicking on Session in the top menu and selecting Disconnect.

That's it! You've successfully connected to an FTP site using WinSCP. Happy file transferring!
